Where can you see flamenco? Flamenco fans are spoiled for choice!
You can see flamenco in a host of different venues …on street corners and in prominent regional or national theatres …in restaurants, bars, and live music venues … and in museums, flamenco schools, community theatres and arts centres.
There’s a flamenco venue for everyone’s taste and budget.
From flamenco shows at local flamenco clubs (called peñas), to performances at local popular or religious festivals, at high level regional or international festivals, and at the flamboyant fiestas, fairs and ferias which take place in every corner of Southern Spain.
But let’s begin at the beginning. The most likely venue for newcomers to flamenco to see a show is in a tablao or small flamenco theatre. These tablaos have distinctive Andalusian style décors and shows are performed on raised wooden platforms called tablas.
Tablaos have developed from the original late 19th century cafes cantantes or singing cafes. The atmosphere is intimate and convivial. Audience members are seated right up close to the artists. Don’t be surprised if sometimes you get invited onto the stage itself!
